it all starts with you coverIt All Starts With You! by K.W. Wilson, illustrated by Josh Flanigan, provides easy-to-understand insight into the cycle of bullying. The book is aimed at elementary school children and is written in fun-to-read rhyme.

The book’s main point is that bullying breeds an ever-increasing cycle of bullying. That is, when a child is bullied he or she is hurt and shares that pain by striking out at other, weaker targets.

The author suggests that one way to stop bullying is to understand this cycle. Specifically, if the child realizes and acknowledges how painful bullying has been to him or her personally, then that realization creates awareness and empathy.

This understanding can end the cycle of inflicting one’s own pain on others. This is a great example of how taking personal responsibility can have a real and very positive impact.

The book has been adopted as the code of conduct in Lockport, New York schools, from the elementary schools all the way through high school because of its anti-bullying message. It has also been shared through numerous Western New York schools for its positive message. It was also the recipient of the 2013 New England Book Festivals honorable mention award.
